The Celeb Diet With One Rule

Its followers include Victoria Beckham, Gisele Bündchen and actress Jennifer Aniston. It’s most widely known as the alkaline ash diet or alkaline acid diet which skyrocketed to fame in 2013 when Victoria Beckham tweeted about an alkaline diet cookbook.

This new favourite celeb diet has only one rule. It doesn’t involve counting calories or abiding by super strict rules, all while having glowing skin and a beautiful body.  Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, apparently this is a real diet!

The diet is the brainchild of nutritionists Natasha Corrett and Vicki Edgson. The basis of it is normalising the body’s PH level, which ideally should be slightly alkaline, with a PH sitting between 7.3 and 7.45. The results of this diet, according to Corrett and Edgson, are improved digestion and an increase in metabolic activity. The duo have written a book, Honestly Healthy: Eat With Your Body In Mind, The Alkaline Way', where you can find more information about this way of eating.

According to the diet program, all foods are divided into two groups - acidic and alkaline. Finding the right foods and the right combinations amongst these two foods groups is a fundamental part of the diet. 

The simple rule is: eat 80% alkaline foods and 20% acidic foods - that’s it!

So, how can an alkaline diet benefit your health? Creating a slightly alkaline environment within your body will have several health benefits, according to Corrett and Edgson, including:

  • It normalises the body’s digestive processes, allowing nutrients to be broken down and be better absorbed, faster.

  • It stabilises blood sugar, which can help with preventing over eating.

  • Your appearance can benefit too,  including glowing skin, a reduction in acne issues and stronger hair and nails.

  • Increased energy.

  • Weight loss.

Participants of the alkaline acid diet don’t need to change their portion size or the number of meals they eat in a day. They just need to follow the food balance rule: eat 80% alkaline foods and 20% acidic foods. However, the nutritionists recommend that you should should cut out sugar and alcohol for quicker results, which is optional.

If you’re a veggie lover, you’ll probably enjoy this diet as it calls for lots of vegetables! If you’re a big meat or fish lover, you’re slightly limited, however the diet does allow for these foods, so as long as you stick to the right balance.

Examples of alkaline forming food products which makes up 80% of the diet:

All types of milk - except for cows milk

All fruits, especially citrus fruits (not grapes however)

All types of greens and salads

Rye bread 

All grains

Nuts - apart from pistachios, cashews and almonds

Pumpkin seeds

Vegetable oil

Vegetables and root plants - except for potatoes, legumes of corn

Lean fish

Green and white tea


Acidic forming food products which makes up 20% of the diet:

Cows milk and its related dairy products

Soda drinks



Pastries, cakes etc

Canned foods


Black tea

Black coffee

Meat, smoked meat or meat products



Fatty fish

White bread

White rice


Dried fruits



Butter and lard

Mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and soy sauce
